I never wanted to think that I would be one of the many families in our area whose children would leave town to make their way. My youngest boy
will graduate from U Albany next week and is staying. He tells me it is just to intern this summer and to stay for graduate school. But it doesn’t look good for his permanent return.
Jobs are scarce in this economic environment and especially scarce in Western New York. Young people have to go where the opportunity resides. I understand the logic but it does not ease the pain.
I don’t believe we are doomed to lose our children to big cities or other states forever but for now we are struggling to keep our children in the area.
The burden of overtaxation has NY in a death spiral. The waste and overspending of the past has reached critical mass. It will not be long before
these practices will collapse under their own weight. As more taxpayers leave the state the ability to pay for the welfare state will die. From its collapse we will see change and new opportunity.
Western New York has some incredible resources that will again become an important element in economic success. Resources such as clean water, abundant natural gas deposits, an infrastructure of top flight universities just to name a few.
It will take new leadership and courage to make the change. I for one will
plan to stay and fight so that someday our children will have the opportunity
they need to start their lives right here in Rochester.
