That was a beautiful and yet heartbreaking story. Thank you Bob.

... my condolences to the family and friends of ADAM GALVEZ. you can tell when someone is proud of the job they do when all they want to do is get back to work. one might wonder if mayor anderson is that proud of himself.they say they support the troops, but to what level.at some level they must stop supporting,at a certain rank they must be saying "i support these soldiers but you others rank to high so you so burn in hell". they don't support Bush or Rumsfield , at what level do they think someone is a "good american" and at what level are they just "those damn republicans". when you are remembering ADAM GALVEZ try and think of the words from a billy ray cyrus song ' ALL GAVE SOME -SOME GAVE ALL.

Bob,
I thank God everyday for men like this young Marine that are willing to put everything on the line for all of us. Even for those that don't understand or appreciate the sacrifice.
I recently returned to California after living in Utah for the last 13 years. Two of my sons joined the military when they came of age in Utah.
My oldest son is serving his second one year tour in Iraq with the Army. He left his wife and two young children at Ft. Lewis, Washington. My second oldest son will be deploying for six months to the Persian Gulf with the US Coast Guard.
Every time that I hear a story about Mayor Anderson I am glad that I no longer live in Utah. I never could understand how he kept getting elected in Salt Lake City. Maybe someday the voters of Salt Lake will come to their senses. I think that Utah needs to add the recall process to the State Constitution. It worked in California!
Thank you for your support of my sons, and all of the men and women in our military.

God bless Adam Galvez's family. From everything I have heard and read, they are great people and this will only make them stronger. It's good to know that more Military Mom's are like Amy Galvez, and not like Cindy Sheehan.
# 5. 8/24/06 4:10 AM
My heart is breaking for Amy Galvez. But I am proud of her son, and proud of her for speaking out on his behalf. She and her son are the true Americans. Rocky Anderson, Cindy Sheehan, Murtha and all the rest should all be ashamed of themselves.

Morning Bob. These Liberals have no idea what is going on in the world. This boy died protecting us from the evil that would like nothing more than to destroy America and ALL Americans. NOT just the Republicans or conservatives. These liberals think we shouldn't be fighting Iraq? Wait until Iran really gets involved. These countries don't care who our President is. They want to kill us all. THEY HAVE SAID IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN! Republican, Democrat it doesn't matter to Iran,Syria,Iraq....... We need to be in Iraq fighting. For our lives. And we need leadership that will continue doing it. So liberals, keep on demonstrating you fools and just wait. Iraq is just the beginning.
My heart goes out to all the parents of soldiers who have died in the war. I couldn't imagine burying a child.

Bob,
Excellent column. It brought out every emotion inside me. I will pray for this family and their loss, along with all those that have sacrificed. They should know that there are many of us who believe in them and that their sacrifices are not in vain. May those that oppose this war learn someday that they are wrong. God Bless America
# 8. 8/24/06 6:59 AM by Dave H - Rochester, NY
Bob: After the men and women who defend this country are finally "honored", by a "gratefull nation" for their sacrifices, they will then witness those who denounced, defamed, desecrated,or, worse, were apathetic to their service, rewarded with the big govt. jobs, the high paying careers, and the happiness and security that goes with being of sound mind and body. That is the Viet Nam legacy , and all Viet Nam veterans, even traitors like John Kerry and Oliver Stoned, know it. Veterans are too forgiving of this nation, and too tolerant of the bloodsuckers, large and small, who live and prosper,w/out shame, on the backs of those Marines and Soldiers who hear and respond to the call defending freedom. But Those who do not serve, for their own selfish reasons, must, finally, like the rest of us, live with themselves. Dave

Hay Bob, Great column today. America sends some of our best and brightest young people and puts them in harms way. Freedom isn't free. Sometimes they don't come back. We are in a fight with fanatical extremists and it will be a long tough struggle. The very least that we can do is stand up and support the men and women who lay it on the line for the rest of us. If some people can't do that then to hell with them. We should all pray for our troops to get the job done and come home soon. One last thing, asking God for the wisdom to see that we are doing the right thing would not hurt either.
# 10. 8/24/06 7:16 AM by Supports Troops but Not Bush - Anywhere
It is very possible to support our troops who are doing an impossible job the best way they can, however, to state that to not support Bush is anti-American - nuh uh. Sorry. I (and many, many others) cannot support a president who mislead us into this war (Bin Ladin is not Iraq) and now we are so deeply entrenched that it will be extremely difficult to get out. It's worse than Vietnam. Our troops are in harms way. How many more of our kids have to die?
At least when Clinton lied, nobody died.
Editor's Note: it's unfortunate that your dark heart could not be penetrated by this mother's plea.
# 11. 8/24/06 7:18 AM by Don - Fort Worth, TX
Thanks, Bob. I'm happy to read about a lady who has the backbone to speak for our troops who are serving this country. It sickens me to hear about this Cindy Sheehan character demoralizing decent citizens and her anti-American attitude. I can imagine her during World War II, supporting Hitler and the emperor of Japan. Amy should be commended for her brave action and we need more like her. We all need the attitude as we had during World War I: "We won't come back, till it's over, over there!"
# 12. 8/24/06 7:18 AM - Fairport, New York
Tragically, that wonderful young man & his family gave the ultimate sacrifice, but what is the average American sacrificing? They don't even risk sacrificing the paint jobs of their gas-guzzling SUVs by having the yellow "Support the Troops" ribbon be a sticker; it's a MAGNET. To me, that is symbolic of the hypocrisy of, "I'm patriotic but let YOUR family member risk their lives over there, not mine." Look how many from the Bush administration got out of putting themselves at risk during the Viet Nam war. It is indeed possible to question who is getting rich from this war and what the true motives of going over there really were and still support the troops and be a patriot as well!
Editor's Note: no it's not.

My heart is breaking for Amy Galvez. But I am proud of her son, and proud of her for speaking out on his behalf. She and her son are the true Americans. Rocky Anderson, Cindy Sheehan, Murtha and all the rest should all be ashamed of themselves. Rocky Anderson is a piece of garbage. May he rot in hell.
# 14. 8/24/06 7:22 AM by Mike Sr - Greece
cindy sheehan and her like, you know the ultra left wing Bush haters, have done more to encourage the killing of our finest than anyone else. There one goal in life is to promote hate for America. I hope it makes her happy knowing that her actions have encouraged the enemy to kill other women sons and daughters. cindy I hope you realize that those like you who came before you encouraged the killing of your son.

# 16. 8/24/06 7:23 AM by Adam - Rochester
A very sad story about a true American hero. Too bad that our leaders including the President don't have the spine to take care of this problem. The only way to stop all this garbage is to go at them full throttle. Right now we are waging a half ass war and our brave men are being killed not by an army, but by stupid little bombs hidden alongside the road. This is being done to appease morons like Cindy Sheehan. When will the leaders including our president figure out that these people hate everyone and will kill anyone that is not a muslim. We have the greatest military force ever assembled, it's time to wake up untie it's left arm and let it go. The whole world will benefit from that. Plus it will prevent more of our heroes from being killed.
# 17. 8/24/06 7:37 AM by Mike
We all have different opinions pertaining to this war. However, spitting in the face of a United States Marine is nothing short of putrid. May God watch over all of you.
# 18. 8/24/06 7:57 AM by steve
Cindy sheehan, and this mayor need to find some pride, if a liberal could find some. But then again someone votes for him, so maybe most agree with him?
I wonder sometimes what it was like to live in America when it was for Americans and we appreciated the troops, think about it, people hate the troops that only exist to protect us. How stupid he we become? I hate that saying I support the troops but not the war, stupid. I don't really like what America has become, the America my ancestors came to is long gone.
My heart goes out to this woman and her family.

God be with the Galvez family. And a huge thanks to them and all the rest of the troops who serve our country.
#10 said "When Clinton lied, no body died". Is that really true? Did he not have an aspirin factory bombed as a kind of "Wags the dog" type distraction during the whole Monica Lewinsky "thing"? If I remember correctly, people did die then.
Great column Bob. One I am sending on to my family members who are all "peace lovers" and "anti war". Knowing full well my husband, an Army reservist, has been on stand by since the war started.

Great tribute Bob,
My sympathy to this strong Marine Mom in the loss of her Son, what a courageous human being this Soldier was.
As to this Rocky bastard and Cindy (bought and paid for by the liberals) Sheehan, they can go straight to hell.
We defeated the Germans and the Japanese in less time than we have been fighting this war in Iraq. WHY? Because we did not have liberal bastards like these two tying our hands to fight in some politically correct manner.
They pressured Bush and our men to fight a war with our hands tied behind our backs but yet they have the gall to complain that we are losing too many soldiers. Typical liberal mental disease, they want it both ways.
We should have gone in full tilt and annihilated the enemy, Bush's shock and awe turned out to portray America in pink tights because of liberals like these two!
Iran, Syria, Bin Laden, and the rest of the sick Islamic scum bags sit back and laugh at the USA because of the wimpy manner the liberals make us fight.
You liberals are as much of an enemy to this Country and the world as these terrorists are. You people sit back in the land of milk and honey while our soldiers protect your ass. I would love to round all of the liberals up and ship them to a terrorists nation. Maybe then their mind set would change.
# 22. 8/24/06 8:30 AM by Akiva - Ramat Mamre / Hebron, Israel
Bob; There is no other country in the world that is more more aware of the risks of being a soldier that here in Israel. My prayers go out to all of the American soldiers that are helping to make this a better world.
I don't understand what business a mayor has in using his position to question foreign policy. Shouldn't local politicians keep their mouths shut about anything outside of their own city?
# 23. 8/24/06 8:49 AM by Thomas - Rochester, Ny
God Bless America, our military and God Bless the Marine Corps. Thank you to all those who have sacrificed so much and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending this great nation and defending the freedoms we all enjoy. Thank you also to the families of those who have fallen and those who still serve we are forever grateful to you and love one.
# 24. 8/24/06 8:55 AM - Mt.Morris, N.Y.
My prayers are with this mother and her family. If Clinton had been paying attention to something other than his zipper we would not be in this state. Terrorism was happening on his watch, only he closed his eyes so he wouldn't have to deal with it. To the writer who sad no one died due to Clintons' lies is sadly mistaken. Cindy Sheehan is a poor pathetic soul who is a pawn for those who are to cowardly to say it themselves. This woman is obviously in such need of attention that she will sell her soul to the devil himself to get it. I thank God for the son of the mother as well as for every other son, brother, father, cousin and friend who is over there KEEPING all of us safe.
# 25. 8/24/06 9:07 AM
To buffoons like this mayor it is all a political game. They don't see that our avowed enemy of 1400 years is about to enter the nuclear age. The games will end when the next 9/11 occurs, as they did, briefly, after 9/11.

This mother is a pleasant counter point to others who act so selfishly and play the victum.
# 27. 8/24/06 9:15 AM
Thank you for letting her be heard. It's wonderful to see a soldier and his family honored in such a way.
Nothing can ever be adequate in that regard, but it's a start.

Another column where Bob tries to spread hate for the half of America called liberals and Democrats and then says they are the ones who hate America. HELL-O, it's you right wingers who daily spread hate for half of America thru the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity and Coulter. Their message is unmistakeably hate liberals and Democrats and you side with them Mr Lonsberry so take responsibility for spreading hate for half of America and quit saying "it's them who hate America". It's you right wingers who spread the hate every day.

I read "Bagdad Christmas" last night.
I found it to be sweet and touching.
I think many people are embarrassed to discuss their faith. They're afraid of being ridiculed or made fun of. Until some event comes along that makes them realize that those things are meaningless and what really counts is the health and possibilities of their soul. Maybe that event is the birth of a child, or the death of a loved one, or coming close to dying oneself.
Your story was a peek into one of those events. The transformation of a soul into something better. The realization that this time on Earth isn't the only time we need to be concerned with. The realization that what we do in this life can count as fighting the good fight with God on our side.
Thanks for sharing your talent with me.

If Rumsfeld, Cheney and Bush truly have the respect for our troops that 99% of the rest of Americans do, they would provide them with TOTAL SUPPORT. That means enough troops to do the job right, proper equipment, and no more B.S. Then they will have more support themselves for this war. A salute to our fallen heroes and deepest sympathies to their families and friends. The cause is just; the leadership is what is lacking.

To #28 and your incessant rants about right wing radio hosts spreading hate. You are correct. They (radio hosts) expose the truth about the misguided liberals and we (their audience)end up hating them (the weenie liberals)for taking our great country down. Perhaps you could remind all of us of just one thing the liberals have done to help this country.

Fantastic article, Bob. My heart goes out to the Galvez family. #28 - Your mind is so sick and twisted that you must have some mental disease (I think it's called liberalism). This "right winger" along with Rush, Sean and Ann do not hate the libs or Dems. They just point out all the stupid, hateful things the libs say and do. The libs and Dems hate Bush and his administration for no good reason. Probably jealousy since they are not in power and will tell any lie to get it back. GET A LIFE #28 (too chicken to sign your name?!)
# 44. 8/24/06 12:14 PM by Jo - Ogden Utah
Right on, Bob. And my prayers for Mrs Galvez. The men and women who sign up for the military know why they do what they do. They are the real patriots. To not applaud them and give them our gratitude is makes us worse than thieves. It makes us scoundrels. That is exactly what Rocky Anderson is. He is the lowest form of life. He is sucking the life out of Salt Lake City and our American heritage. I think he plans to head up the ACLU here, do you know, Bob? Fitting place for him. He has been doing to SLC what the ACLU has been doing to America. All true patriots should refuse to let this war be lost in the media by the likes of Rocky, Cindy, and the entertainment business. We need to be vocal and let our troops know we applaud and support them and are grateful. Letters to the editor, books such as your Baghdad Christmas, etc. No, you can't have it both ways. Either you support the troops AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING, or you are not a patriot. Period

Bob: My nephew Anthony is an Army MP in the Al Anbar region of Iraq. In the last week, their platoon of thirty suffered 14 casualties in the last week. He wrote the family an e-mail to let us know he was all right because he knew it would be all over the news. I don't have the heart to tell him the truth. That the media over here doesn't care. That they haven't reported anything like what the truth is since the beginning of the war. That they probably caused some of his brothers to be killed. That they lie for their own advantage. It's a very sad day for me. I pray for his safety.

I listen to your radio show every day. I listened yesterday with great intent to Amy Galvez and her graciousness and eloquence. I could not help but feel deeply the loss that she has experienced. You see, I too have a Marine son. He, too, is a Lance Corporal. He is planning for a January 2007 deployment to Iraq. He eagerly anticipates his service there. He will leave a wife and 2 small children here to worry and wonder with us about his safety and happiness. It is a mother's plight to bring a child into the world and spend the remainder of her life full of concern with many sleepless nights and many hours on bended knee pleading for that child's welfare. Amy Galvez hit the nail on the head yesterday in her interview with you, Bob, that the mayor of Salt Lake and Cindy Sheehan should not be the only presence at the upcoming demonstration. Cindy does her deceased son a great disservice by her actions. She has allowed Mayor Rocky Anderson to become yet another hateful exploiter of her situation for his own political gain. Shame on him. Shame on her. I have no respect for either of them. For Amy Galvez, I have the greatest respect and honor her loss. I know what it is like to lose a son. It is not easy. I pray the one that is now in the Marines will not suffer the same fate as Adam Galvez. But that is a risk my Marine son was willing to take. And I am proud of him. Dang proud of him. And, should he also make the ultimate sacrifice, that pride will not turn into an ugly vengeance upon the country for which he proudly fought. I will honor his service and sacrifice in life or death.

I have no idea how it is we think that we are keeping the enemy out of our country by simply having troops in Iraq. That is a big lie!
Bush has created more enemies than we've ever had before, with his actions and policies!
We are wasting valuable resources and valuable lives in a losing effort when those resources should be put to good use fighting the enemy. Iraq was not our enemy until Bush decided to make it a problem. Now he has a huge unwinnable mess.
