I guess this means you're not doing any Utah broadcasting again any time soon.

Editor's Note: actually, there may be news on that front fairly soon.

thumbsup.gif Go for it, Bob!

thumbsup.gif Great idea Bob! Wrap your arms around your wife and those kids and pack em' in a motor home and teach your kids just what America is and how great we have it! While bring us the greatness of your broadcasting. Stop by here in Geneseo, I never thought it would be so wonderful, until I saw it for the first time driving in front of our moving van last year. Yea... I miss Utah and all that is there but Geneseo is quite amazing too. Blessings to you my friend. I hope your idea works and I get to listen to you again. I miss your Sunday Shows most! Laura

Editor's Note: geneseo? in what state?

thumbsup.gif If this works out, let's hope the Princess Bride is a great home school teacher and that the radio show can buy you a home on wheels. Pack up the family and hit the highway. It'll be a bit tough for the kids to socialize, but they may have growth in areas that will make other kids jealous.

Don't forget that each state you are in will want their piece of your income taxes. You'll need a very good accountant to keep track of who you owe how much to. (It'll be an accounting nightmare that Pyle never had to consider.)

thumbsup.gif Fantastic Bob! We are pulling for you. In the mean time folks the fight is not over. (A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush, you know.) Today is the day to keep contacting our Utah stations. It’s critical to do it every day. Contact KNRS today! I did. thumbsup.gif If you could encapsulate a summer's sunrise poured from the Big Horn Range's bottle-top carafe to caress Lovell, WY and then etch this miracle into our rear-view mirror, that would be a labor of love or a set of DVD's.

Warning for Ring Lardner and Charles Kuralt Roadies: Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. Good Luck with your venture.

thumbsup.gif You probably see it as your opportunity to change America

I see it as America's chance to change you.

# 8. 7/15/10 5:50 AM by MikeNTNY - North Tonawanda, NY
thumbsup.gif Hey Bob, Great idea! I hope it comes into being. It is kind of like what Charles Kuralt used to do on CBS with his "On the Road" series of short bits on the CBS Sunday Morning Show. The big difference is he had a video camera. You will have to paint what you see with words. If anybody can do it, you can. Chase your dreams and make them happen.

thumbsup.gif Has anyone besides myself read Arch Merrill? He was a writer for the old Times Union, traveling throughout Western New York, and writing of its history, people and geography. Arch Merrill was the origional "roots" guy.His books are in the Library. I recommend them.

Editor's Note: arch was an editor for the democrat and chronicle, and a classmate of my great-grandfather. he wrote a column each saturday for the paper, and about every year he compiled these into a book. i have read him since boyhood, and his books are still a very quaint look at what our area used to be.

thumbsup.gif Do not throw that dream to the wind because I think it is a great idea. I hope the radio gentleman thinks so too. I would even love to do something like that if I were younger. But alas I am not

# 11. 7/15/10 6:22 AM by Rick G. - Spencerport, NY
All you need is a camper named Rocinante, a poodle named Charley and the desire and opportunity to make it happen. With the technology of the 21st century, one could almost do that from one’s living room, but the open road satisfies the wanderlust a whole lot better.

Editor's Note: actually, for years i jokingly told people i was concieved on that trip, that steinbeck made a pass through canisteo and there i was. i look like him kind of. unfortunately, i was born in 1959 and he and charley made their trip in 1961. and i think it's important to note that charley was a standard poodle.

# 12. 7/15/10 6:28 AM by A Patriot - Lockport, NY
"On the Road with Bob Lonsberry"...has a familiar ring to it. Maybe they'll give you a motorhome. Can I come along, too?

# 13. 7/15/10 6:42 AM by Rick G. again - Spencerport, NY
Regarding the poll: My family never traveled when I was a kid, and I think that’s why I’ve had such a desire to see other things. I’m on the high end of the 21-30 answer, but in 2 ½ weeks, I’ll be nailing down a longtime dream of mine – I’ll be traveling for two weeks through Alaska.

I’ve taken one summer vacation in 30 years - and it was only a week at that - but as they say; you’re not getting any younger.

Two weeks off in the summer is going to be hard. Somebody has to cut the lawns, weed the flowerbeds and water everything. What about work? What if something happens while I’m gone?

I’m hoping that within a day or two, I’ll have forgotten about that.

And I’m taking my journal. How could I not?

Editor's Note: alaska would be a dream. excellent. enjoy this trip of a life time.

Gomer Pyle was hilarious, but he was much smarter than you are.

thumbsup.gif Great idea, love it. Hope this works out.

Poll? I'm at 35, but many of the states were traveled in to get from here to there (or vice versa). Then there's Colorado, a touch-down in Denver for a connecting flight; I'm not proud, I'll take it. :^) Lots of fine country out there, from a bandit-hideout cave outside of Tucson, to the San Juan Islands' blackberries of Washington; Bristol Maine to Christmas Florida. It's all good. Visit it, write it.

# 17. 7/15/10 7:00 AM
Good for you Bob, your ideology of pulling yourself back up and moving forward is working. Like anything else, there is nothing like a challenge when it comes to life.

# 18. 7/15/10 7:01 AM by Steve - Penfield NY
I don't want to burst your bubble Bob but this is the type of thing PBS does and not many listen. I think you would be great with a Saturday morning syndicated show focusing on national political issues that impact small town America and making it relevant to every small town. Sprinkle in some social aspects of our lives in America today and add a lot of your humor and it will be a home run. A cross between the chit chat you get from weekday morning shows on Stations across America and a Rush Limbaugh. Good luck I hope your syndication dream comes true. Your humor and personality and ability to know what is important to Americans would be welcome on Saturday mornings.

thumbsup.gif Heeeeeeyyyyyy Bob,

Great idea. Or, how about some of the legendary places of our country - Gettysburg, Yorktown, Mount Rushmore, the Alamo, to name just a few.

I can't wait. My radio is ready and I'll be listening. Good luck.

Keep writing.

Editor's Note: those would be great places to hit, no doubt.

thumbsup.gif Ernie Pyle also has a special place in my heart. I was a 1-year old baby when my folks came across the Atlantic on the "USS Ernie Pyle" in 1947. They wanted a better life for themselves and my brother and me. Thanks to them and Ernie, it became a reality.

Editor's Note: outstanding

I read your column every day. Most are interesting, some not. Arch Merrill was always an interesting read. As was the great Henry Clune. You must read "The Genesee" by both of them. So much local history! And the words just literally jump off the page at you.

Editor's Note: as a boy i thought arch was a great writer. when i revisited him as an adult, he wasn't actually a very good writer. there's a reason he went the editor route instead of the writer route. but he was enterprising, and he helped define the spirit of his time. clune wrote "the genesee" which is still the best general history of the region. clune was a better writer, but he was the last wave of the classical generation and his writing would seem very dense and obtuse to us today. arch sold more books, but clune wrote better books. the two of them, however, are clearly the dominant rochester writers of the 1900s, and if you're going to know this area, you've got to read their books. today, flying far lower on the radar, but producing very solid material is bob marcotte. his civil war book is definitive.

# 25. 7/15/10 8:34 AM
Bob,

Your so vocal today!!!! I know, you are seeing $ signs. When you have it and thi take it away, it just goes to show you how important mula becomes, with all those children and all.

# 26. 7/15/10 9:03 AM by RC - Bloomington
Bob, I know you could never say you are a modern day Ernie Pyle, so I will continue to say it for you. Ernie was special, but I've been out of Rochester (Victor) NY for five years and I don't miss a column. I think my grandfather thought the same way about Ernie's columns. If you miss a week you make sure you go back and read them because you don't want to miss anything.

# 27. 7/15/10 9:14 AM by JT - Rochester
No angry, rhetoric spewing tough guy today. Today it's the folksy writer just trying to soak up America. Pick a personality and stick to it.

Editor's Note: bend over, i'll show you where i'm going to stick it.

# 28. 7/15/10 9:16 AM by shaun - Provo
I am surprised it took even this long to get something going. I still want you back M-F. I await the announcement. Congratulations!

# 29. 7/15/10 9:17 AM by Fairport mom
Let's hope you don't have the same demons that would cause someone to shut himself in a hotel room with a bottle.

Having said that, I personally think your slice-of-life columns are your finest writings, and I'd love to see you work from a broader canvas.

# 30. 7/15/10 9:22 AM by ex-pansy
Without getting into too many of the extenuating circumstances, (and there are several), I have never traveled outside of the Eastern Time Zone, and I haven't left the Empire State since 1995. Sounds pathetic, yes, I know; but life is what it is.

I'm hoping that I have enough energy after the Wineglass to hop over to PA, just to say that, for a few minutes at least, I slipped the surly bonds of New York.

# 31. 7/15/10 9:30 AM by Diane - Erda, Utah
I remember on the road with Charles Kuralt? I think you would be better as you have that down home appeal. I love hearing your point of view. How are things going for Lee?

Editor's Note: not very well

# 32. 7/15/10 9:33 AM
Sounds like you want to look at the traditional notion of America instead of the actual people in it.

You are in love with smalltown Norman Rockwell/Mayberry America and you keep pushing the idea that "that's America". No, it's a part of America. And a part that has been over run by corporations such as McDonald's, Burger King and basically the same 'ol same 'ol pizza/sub shop.

Guy Fieri has a great show doing Diners, Drive-In's and Dives on the Food Network. It is a show similar to what you are talking about but concentrates on eating places that are popular with Americans where the food isn't straight from a factory farm.

Invent an idea where it concentrates on a particular something and share it with America. Don't just cry the conservative talking points of apple pie, baseball and family. It's being done to death.

Editor's Note: eff you very much

# 33. 7/15/10 9:35 AM by NascarDad - Richmond, VA
thumbsup.gif What a great idea. Seems funny that so many of the syndicated shows come from the media capitals anyhow and they get a myopic view of real America after living in NYC or DC before too long.

# 34. 7/15/10 9:46 AM
I read the comments and I am very surprized that not one wiseass commie liberal didn't say:

"What a Pyle!"

Oh, I just did.

Um, you ain't kidding me Bob, this is all part of your plans to run for the presidency in 2020 or 2024. This America tour will give you the "I've seen America" cred.

It's all falling in place.

# 35. 7/15/10 9:51 AM by kittynana - Lewiston NY
thumbsup.gif Husband and I took a 2 1/2 week trip cross country last summer. Went to Oregon out route 80 and came back route 90. AMAZING. I recommend it to every American. (And earlier in the summer, I was in West Palm Beach visiting family. I had my toes in the Atlantic AND Pacific oceans last year).

# 36. 7/15/10 10:12 AM
"Editor's Note: actually, for years i jokingly told people i was concieved on that trip, that steinbeck made a pass through canisteo and there i was. i look like him kind of. unfortunately, i was born in 1959 and he and charley made their trip in 1961. and i think it's important to note that charley was a standard poodle.

Why did you have to qualify that Charley was a dog? Aren't your readers literate enough to know that? Also, it's i before e except after c. Guess you aren't Steinbeck's son :)

Editor's Note: i before e except after c except in concieved -- per my dictionary. i didn't quality that charley was a dog, i pointed out that the man said he was a poodle, actually he was a standard poodle. steinbeck didn't have a little foo-foo dog, charley was a big, sturdy man's job. and, eff you very much for your concern.

# 37. 7/15/10 10:15 AM
Bob Marcotte writes interesting articles on local Rochester history, and his book "Where They Fell" about Rochester area civil war soldiers is excellent.

Editor's Note: yeah, that's the book i was referencing. even his birdwatching stuff on thursdays is interesting. he's a genuine talent.

# 38. 7/15/10 10:52 AM by Travis - Riverton, UT
This is something that you could do. You can always make any story interesting. I always enjoyed hearing your retelling of any story. Whether the story was about your children or the retailing of some news story. I was always captivated. If anyone can do this, I would say you have the best chance of succeeding at it.

# 39. 7/15/10 11:16 AM by John - Rochester, NY
Bob,

On a day off, take a short trip down Route 15 to PA and ride and write about the Millersburg Ferry. It's an American treasure.

# 40. 7/15/10 11:17 AM by Wade - Eagle Mountain, UT
thumbsup.gif I've seen TV shows like that. My brother-in-law used to watch this show called California Gold where the guy traveled around California. And there used to be a show on the travel channel where they went from county fair to county fair. I hope it works out for you, but who will give me my local Utah talk?

Editor's Note: don't count me out, stud.

# 41. 7/15/10 11:46 AM by I wish - Utahrrr
I wish your column would get picked up by all, and you would become the next Mike Royko. You see things like he did, and you write like him. I loved his columns...he was not afraid to tell it like it was.

Editor's Note: sadly, i don't believe any newspapers or newspaper companies agree with you. it would have been great to be alive in those days.

# 42. 7/15/10 12:00 PM by Cal Pitzrick - Rochester, NY
thumbsup.gif Bob, another great column. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for you! Many great opportunities I hope! My crystal ball suggests that you work with Glenn Beck, with telling it like it is! What a force that would be! I do know that God works in mysterious ways!

Glenn Beck today was thanking his praying supporters. He is for our Personal Salvation as opposed to Obama`s collective social gospel salvation, which the POPE CALLS DEMONIC! The Black Panthers say that they are going to force Glenn to a confrontation at the Lincoln Memorial, this September 28 th! This could be dangerous since the Black Panthers are calling for " the killing of Crackers and their babies"!

As I understand it, the Presidents social gospel calls for the destroying of "oppresive" America with the Black Panthers saying that with the murder of whites and their babies while destroying America, will bring them Collective Salvation, which is not Biblical at all!

I believe that God will bring Christian Revival, especially with Dem strategious James Carville, just asked for prayer for the Dems in November!

On April 18, 1945, Pyle died on Ie Shima, an island off Okinawa Honto, after being hit by Japanese machine-gun fire.[13] He was travelling in a jeep with Lieutenant Colonel Joseph B. Coolidge (commanding officer of the 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division) and three other men. The road, which ran parallel to the beach two or three hundred yards inland, had been cleared of mines, and hundreds of vehicles had driven over it. As the vehicle reached a road junction, an enemy machine gun located on a coral ridge about a third of a mile away began firing at them. The men stopped their vehicle and jumped into a ditch. Pyle and Coolidge raised their heads to look around for the others; when they spotted them, Pyle smiled and asked Coolidge "Are you all right?" Those were his last words. The machine gun began shooting again, and Pyle was struck in the left temple (however, the Ernie Pyle State Historic Site in Dana, Indiana, contains a telegram from the Government to Pyle's father stating Pyle was killed by a sniper). The colonel called for a medic, but none were present. It made no difference—Pyle had been killed instantly.

He was buried with his helmet on, laid to rest in a long row of graves among other soldiers, with an infantry private on one side and a combat engineer on the other. At the ten-minute service, the Navy, Marine Corps, and Army were all represented.[5] Pyle was later reburied at the Army cemetery on Okinawa, then moved to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific located in Honolulu. When Okinawa was returned to Japanese control after the war, the Ernie Pyle monument was one of only three American memorials allowed to remain in place. Pyle was among the few American civilians killed during the war to be awarded the Purple Heart.

Editor's Note: don't you have to source wikipedia when you copy and paste them like that?

thumbsup.gif Dear Bob,

Miss hearing you in the morning in Utah. Your understanding of the local market, it's politics, it's failings and it's successes, wrapped in your good humor and passion, was my morning cup of joe. I looked forward to your banter with Lee and your Friday admonition to go to church. You were a friend.

You were stunned to receive the call on Wednesday, but my shock came on Thursday. I gave KNRS until Friday to correct their egregious mistake. They didn't. So I made the choice to move on. Personally committing to not listen to KNRS until you returned. I have changed all presets and found a surrogate until you return to Salt Lake airwaves. Until then, my best to you and your family. Your goodness was always an inspiration.

Your Friend,

Darren

Comrade Lonsberry,

My Nightmare of late....

Seeing School Buses on the roads in the morning rush hour in July. WHY??? i know...summer school.

If failers and their parents or those who try to overachieve and take new courses in the summer to get ahead want SUMMER SCHOOL, well how can I say this nicely...Let them pay 100% for it & pay 100% for the transportation. Talk about double dipping in the school budget process paying for 2 tries at an education! WRONGO. Stay back a year or pay up (or perhaps keeping the nose to the grindstone the first time would be best - as the vast majority do). It's time to give those buses the summer vacation that they deserve and cut our taxes.

What a nightmare we live in now - and the yellow buses keep on rolling. Duh...

thumbsup.gif Bob has not divulged any thing concrete yet and we want Bob back in Utah. So keep up the fight until then. # 47. 7/9/10 12:01 PM by Masked Marvel - Parts Unknown

"To all you Salt Lake City "Bring back Bob" efforts, let me clue you in on what works. Money talks ... your pleadings do not.

Contact sponsors/advertisers of the station and tell them you will not buy from them until Bob Lonsberry is back ... then don't buy ... this is how it really works ... enough calls the advertisers will start advertising on another station ...

Same thing happened in Rochester, after losing well over $1 million in advertising revenues with Bob gone; the owners had a different view of events and the folding to the hypocritical Ministers and Mayor of Rochester. I imagine the margins on advertising is very high like 90% ....

When the big shots start getting hit in the cash flow somehow they find the right decision. Sad but true."

Dear M.M.: I agree.

Okay people let's contact the KNRS advertisers. Don't just stop using their product, but send a letter, too, so they know exactly what the deal is.

Since I have been scanning the other talk station here I have discovered that many of the KNRS advertisers advertise on the other talk radio stations, as well, so the letter is essential.

Go to the "Bring Back Bob Lonsberry" site where a list of advertisers has been started. (Add any that that you know of that are not on the list.)

Keep up the spirit and lets get Bob and Lee back.

Re: Editor's Note: don't you have to source wikipedia when you copy and paste them like that?

I'm an English professor and I don't allow my students to use Wikipedia, sourced or not. It's not reliable enough.

Editor's Note: wikipedia is for when "close enough" is close enough. i wish there was a similar authoritative internet place. remember encyclopedias when we were kids? do they even make those any more? could we get a good set on the internet? i found a complete set of 20-year-old encyclopedia brittanica at a used-bood store once and thought i had won the lottery. as a kid, i used to love to just pull a volume of my aunt's encyclopedia off the shelf and read it randomly. that was some good knowledge.
